The approach is based on the space-time averaging of the point-scale conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy over a representative elementary watershed REW ; . The up-scaled variables and properties associated with the REW are spatially lumped quantities, varying only in time. The governing equations constitute a system of coupled ordinary differential equations ODE ; , yielding a drastic simplification of the description of the system compared with conventional spatially distributed models. The averaged equations are supplemented by constitutive relationships that have been derived through application of the second law of thermodynamics. The parametrisation of these relationships is crucial for an accurate description of the subwatershed physics. The REW approach can be used as a rainfall runoff simulation tool on its own, but it can also be useful as a preliminary step for a more detailed modelling using spatially distributed methods. The main advantage of the approach is that it uses far less computer resources than conventional methods. In this presentation we apply the REW modelling approach to an existing river catchment. We study the response of the watershed to a number of rainfall events. Furthermore, we briefly discuss the parametrisation employed for the constitutive relationships and consider the effects of independent parameters.
